Valentines Day…God and Mira bai

We can not argue with everybody about the origin and meaning of Valentines Day…

We can not even wait for Valentines Day to express our love for our beloved, our family, friends and above all ‘our God…’

We can not find eternal peace with our knowledge, rationality, wealth, science and technology…We need to have intense love for God to know him…

“As our human relations can be made divine, so our relationship with God may take any of these forms and we can look upon Him as our father or mother or friend or beloved. Calling God Mother is a higher ideal than calling Him Father; and to call Him Friend is still higher; but the highest is to regard Him as the Beloved. The highest point of all is to see no difference between lover and beloved.”

- Swami Vivekananda

A key moment in the life of Mirabai was her marriage to Prince Bhoj Raj. The marriage gave Mirabai a very high social status. However Mirabai felt little if any attraction to the worldly comforts and pleasures of the Palace. After finishing daily duties whenever she had the opportunity Mirabai spend time in prayer and meditation on her beloved Krishna.

Her soul felt a spontaneous and overwhelming love for Sri Krishna. Her poems speak of the unbearable pangs of separation she felt when she could not contemplate and see her Krishna.

The Bible Says: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”(John 15:13).

God showed us this love by coming in Christ to die for our sins. And St. Valentine demonstrated this love when he died for his friends. This is the kind of love that Valentine’s Day is really about.
