Smoking in any form is nicotine addiction and is harmful to almost all the organs of body, including smokeless tobacco which contains 28 cancer causing agents. Passive smoker’s are at a greater risk.

A chronic smoker with cancer of larynx came to our E.N.T casualty department with breathing difficulty. My professor advised him admission for tracheostomy (making a hole in neck and putting tube in trachea).
We were stunned to see from window that patient went out and started smoking in a corner. My professor called him inside got angry on him and he promised not to ever smoke…
Smoking is difficult to quit but strong will power and family support helps. Strong motivation is required as person will often swear on his loved one to quit and smoke very next moment going to the extent of lying and hiding. But help of loved one by being supportive, understanding and caring will certainly help. Take help of a doctor, keep yourself busy, change company, do exercise and meditation.
11 th march was ‘No Smoking Day’ an annual health awareness day in the United Kingdom. The theme of the 2009 campaign is ‘Take the first step’ which encourages smokers to take the first step and quit on No Smoking Day.
